Looking ahead to Gardening...

Here is a photo of one of my favorite things to grow: It's a Lemon Cucumber.

This is the BEST cucumber I've ever eaten. It's mild and crunchy, and easy to grow; one you get the plant started. Since I garden in containers on my veranda, I need to maximize my space and I have purchased some very helpful products from Gardners.com I've included their blog in my roll. Our drought conditions as they affect CA and NV

In the Gardening catagory -

I'm looking ahead to gardening in the not too distant future now...I'll start some things by seed outdoors in March. It will be things like spinach, lettuce, arugula, etc. - things that prefer the cooler temperatures; in fact, 'cold' is fine too. And, gardening reminds me of 'pest control' and that takes me to 'Ladybugs'. Ladybugs, and in particular, their larvae are real workhorses. And, I thought to share one of my photographs with you all, in case you don't know what a 'baby ladybug' (aka larvae) looks like.

The larvae is pictured on the left hand side of the photo and the newly-formed (infant) ladybug is on the right. It's quite fascinating, I think. I couldn't take my eyes off of them while they were going through their process on my veranda. And, I can't wait until I'll have them here again to help me tend to my garden when spring arrives. On a River Walk along the Truckee with downtown Reno, NV in the background

Hi, Everyone - As you have probably heard, we are needing snow and/or rain very badly here in Reno, NV. This photo was taken of me (Pam) while out on a walk just last week; as you can see, it looks like late fall instead of January.

This is a delightful walk from a park west of here. We like to go to The Silver Peak Resturante for a bite to eat and then walk back to the originating park. Silver Peak has delicious soup AND it's the only place I know of that offers Beet Chips on the 'side'. Their Lamb Burgers are to die for. Yum! It makes me hungry just to think of them. Reno is a delightful place to visit. If you like the outdoors, we have many beautiful and scenic places right in our backyard. Come visit us! Pam Pam's Fab Photos

Black Bean/Corn/Sweet Potato Chili - one of my 'FAVS'

Here's a photo of this delicious, nutritious, dish.

I was first introduced to this recipe through Eating Well Magazine (without the corn) and you can obtain that original recipe from their website: EatingWell.com. Click on the search bar for recipes and it will come right up. However, a friend suggested I add corn because her husband loves corn in this type of dish. I decided to include some frozen corn and it is a real 'crowd-pleaser'. In fact, I use the frozen Roasted Corn from Trader Joe's. Here is the recipe for two: http://caloriecount.about.com/black-bean-corn-sweet-potato-recipe-r1203832 As you can see, I made a few changes; mostly because the original recipe was a little too spicy for my taste. And, I like to serve it with a dolp of fat free sour cream on top; and, if available some fresh or dried cilantro. I love to use CalorieCount.com to analyze recipes. This is the first entry in the New Year of 2014.  My plan is to post all things 'interesting' twice a month.
